Hospital Tour

Today we got to take a look at the Family Birth Center at the hospital we are going to deliver. It was nice to be able to see what the rooms are going to look like and learn what the hospital has to offer. The tour leader walked us through the route we are going to take when we go into labor. We traced the route from Triage to the Birthing Suite, stopped at the C-Section area, then to the Family Suites (recovery), passed by the NICU and the Nursery. One thing that I thought added to the tour was that the tour leader was an actual nurse in the Birth Center. Daniel really liked towards the end when we passed by a baby getting bundled up to go home. 5 more weeks!

Tagged...

So this is the first time I've been tagged (at least that I've noticed).

1) Choose the 4th folder where you store your pictures on your computer.
2) Select the 4th picture in the folder.
3) Explain the picture.
4) Tag 4 people to do the same. No cheating (cropping, editing, etc.) Have fun!!

This picture was taken in August when Daniel's sister Elise was visiting and one of her previous roommates was moving to Madison. We went to visit the Vilas Zoo. Daniel had to get a picture of a badger as that is the school mascot here. We took a lot because this little guy was not willing to stay still (but deleted all the bad ones or this might have been a picture of a part of a badger or blurry).

I tag Lisa (just to make sure you do it...), Leisa, Bethany, and Margaret (just cause you were there...)

Ultrasound Pictures

So we know these are a little delayed, but we finally posted the Ultrasound pictures on the right hand side of our blog (after cropping the personal information off them).

Also there are 8 days left to vote on when you think Baby is coming... Any comments on guessing the exact date can be tied to this post. ;)

Temple Trip

After learning that the Chicago Temple was going to be closed until early March due to a water pipe breaking (the pipe broke the week we were going to go in December) we decided that if we wanted to attend the temple before Baby got here, we would have to go to the next closest temple... Which is actually the St. Paul Minnesota temple, but we opted to drive about 45 minutes longer to go to Nauvoo.
Before we left we took our car in to get the oil changed (we got a coupon from Midas for a free oil change and 45 point inspection). We learned that one of our tires has a small chunk taken out of it, and while it is okay to drive in town, if we were to take it on a long trip we would have a chance for a blow out. Since we didn't have enough time to get a new tire and such, we ended up renting a car for about $30 for the two days.
We left for Nauvoo in our rental car Friday afternoon. We missed the the exit to I-39 in Rockfort, IL and ended up going about 10 miles until the next exit. We stopped and had a late lunch at Panda Express (at an Oasis, before we got to the exit where we could turn around) - we shared a meal and so we only got one fortune cookie - when we opened it, it said "You are heading in the right direction". The irony was great. After we got turned around, we were aboule to make it to Nauvoo around 9:30.
The next morning we checked out and went to the temple for a session barely making it on time because check out took longer than we thought it would. After the session we drove around Nauvoo, visiting the Visitor's Center, the Scovill Bakery and the brickyard. We drove by some of the other historic places but because we wanted to get back to Madison before midnight we didn't stop at them.
On our way back we took another detour which took us about 20 minutes out of the way (we ended up on Davenport, Iowa). We got home about 11PM. I slept until 11:30 the following day and was still tired. I decided a 2 day trip with over 10 hours driving is not something I'll ever do again when I'm 32 weeks pregnant.
This is one of the only pictures we got before our camera batteries died.

Parenting and Childbirth Class

So Daniel and I signed up for a Parenting and Childbirth Class through our HMO. We decided the one that would work best for us was 2 all day Saturday classes (as we didn't know Daniel's schedule for Spring Semester at the time we registered). The first was 1/3 and the second 1/10. We went to the first class last Saturday, which lasted from 8:30-4:30 with a 45 minute break for lunch. The class was mildly instructive, but definately not enough new information for an 8 hour class. It surprised me that they went over the anatomy of pregnancy and childbirth - what pregnant woman has made it to her last trimester without knowing what/where her Uterus is?!? Or who thinks that holding an ice cube can simulate how you will react in labor? Where do they come up with this stuff?

The "best" idea they had with this class was to hold it in the second floor waiting room of the doctors office (since it was Saturday it was not being used, but the elevator was also not programmed to work on Saturday - so if you can't do stairs you're out of luck). So just imagine a room where sick people have been waiting all week getting germs everywhere and then put 12 women in their last trimester of pregnancy learning coping techniques (leaning on chairs, laying on the floor, etc) can we say BAD IDEA? I woke up Sunday morning with a sore throat and have been sick all week, so unfortunately I won't be able to go tomorrow and practice changing diapers on a doll... I'm not a 5 year old playing house - I don't need to practice changing a diaper on a doll (and maybe I've just changed a few too many diapers in my life to think that practicing on a doll is practical.)

"Sleep" Study

So, I've been having trouble with the amount of sleep I get for quite some time. We always hear that eight hours is the amount to get, but I often get 9-10 hours and still feel tired and have a hard time getting up. So, I talked to my doctor and got a referral to have a polysomnogram done. I arrived at the place at 7:30pm on Wednesday night and checked in. After some paperwork, the technician came in to hook me up. This was a process that took about 30-40 minutes. When I took a potty break, I took a minute to look at myself in the mirror. Let's just say that I don't think electrodes and wires is going to be the next big fashion trend. Besides the electrodes, there was also something stuck up my nose (not comfy) plus a band around my abdomen and another around my chest and an oximeter on one of my fingers. Whee!!!

So, I settled down at about 8:30 or so and read some and watched some TV. (PS I haven't watched TV in a long time...I could probably write an entire entry just about that...) Somewhere around 10:30 or so, I decided to try and sleep. To make a long story short, I couldn't sleep. When the technician came in in the morning, he said I had actually slept for only 2 hours and 38 minutes and had never reached REM sleep. Sigh... so, while that doesn't really help them figure out why I need to sleep half the day to function, it does mean they will believe me when I say that some nights I have trouble sleeping. Don't get me wrong, this was atypical even for me, but I would have liked to actually sleep during my sleep study.

Things you should know before getting a sleep study done yourself:
-It is really weird to be filling out paperwork and realize that there is no clock in the room to mark the time and, while searching for a clock hear a voice say 'It's 7:44.' Yeah, they don't just hook you up to electrodes and such, they have a camera on you the whole time. Kind of creepy.
-Continuing in that same vein, it is really awkward to have to announce to an empty room that you need to go to the bathroom.
-Have someone pick you up. I think I was a little more out of it than is good for me. I drove about half a mile before realizing I needed to pull over and scrape off the windows. In my defense, I could see through the ice, but not well.

When I got home, I slept from 9 to 3:30. Go figure.

Happy New Year!

So this year for New Year's Eve, Daniel and I got to play one of my favorite board games with his two sisters. What makes this so special? Well, one of his sisters is currently in China and the other was in New Mexico. We were able to play Ticket to Ride online across 3 time zones and 2 continents. It was a blast to be able to connect long distance to family! It was definately passed our bedtime when we finished, though. ;)

Happy New Year Everybody!
